"Der unsichtbare Pianist" // Historical reproducing grand piano concert // German Music Archive of the German National Library in Leipzig // Wednesday, 24 January 2018, 18:00

In our "Der unsichtbare Pianist" series of concerts we present a selection from our treasure trove of piano rolls.

We are often fascinated by what we cannot see. A good example is the mechanical Steck "Duo-Art" reproducing grand piano built in 1925 which plays music without any visible performer. In this early form of mechanical sound recording, a pianist's performance was recorded on a paper roll which could then - when inserted into a suitable instrument - reproduce the music.

Experience works by Beethoven, Chopin, Gershwin and Ravel – some played by major pianists of the early 20th century, some by the composers themselves.
Between the individual pieces we provide information on interesting aspects of the instrument, the piano rolls, the works and their performers.
