Descriptive cataloguing

Descriptive cataloguing at the German National Library is carried out using a tiered model and various methods (cataloguing and catalogue enrichment). It includes the re-use of data from other providers. Descriptive cataloguing is continually being developed in a range of different projects.

Since October 2015, cataloguing involves the entry of bibliographic data based on the Resource Description and Access (RDA) code; before, it was based on the Rules for Alphabetical Cataloguing (RAK). Scans of covers and tables of contents are being added to the cataloguing data as part of the ongoing and retrospective catalogue enrichment process. Continuing resources are recorded in the German Union Catalogue of Serials (ZDB).

The bibliographic descriptions are documented in the Series of the Deutsche Nationalbibliografie and can be used for searches via the portal catalogue.
