Guided tours in Leipzig

"Wie die Bücher wohnen. 100 Jahre Magazingeschichte" // European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 guided tour // German National Library in Leipzig // Thursday, 29 March 2018, 10:30 // fully booked

On the "Wie die Bücher wohnen. 100 Jahre Magazingeschichte" guided tour we invite you to explore the stacks and we reveal how we store our holdings.

The German National Library in Leipzig contains 205 km of shelving crammed full of books, journals, CDs, gramophone records and notated music in just under 50,000 m² of stack space. The original building of the Deutsche Bücherei was opened in 1916. Ever since then the stacks have been extended and developed continuously to meet the demand for space which increases every day.

On the tour you see the different generations of stack technology from 100 years of library history in the Leipzig building of the German National Library. The preservation staff show you both the oldest and newest stacks. See historical shelving systems and ultramodern, air-conditioned rooms and discover what technical possibilities the future might hold for the stacks of tomorrow.
