Submission procedures
One-off registration is necessary before making a delivery.
1. Submission procedures for monograph online publications
There are currently three methods for submitting online publications. Submission via web form and two automatic submission methods.
Delivery of monograph online publications via the web form
1. Call up the web form for submitting online publications.
2. Identify yourself by means of your email address and your password.
3. Complete the form and check your details on the "Confirm data" page.
4. Send off the form. You will then receive confirmation of the successful data transfer.

Delivery of monograph online publications using automatic delivery methods
The German National Library offers two automatic submission procedures: the harvesting and the hotfolder procedures. Metadata needs to be submitted alongside the objects themselves in both submission procedures.
Automatic harvesting submission procedure
In the case of automatic delivery (OAI harvesting), the submitter identifies a repository from which the German National Library can automatically obtain information on any new publications. This is effected using a technical protocol which describes the exact procedure and which must be implemented by both parties - a harvesting protocol, e. g. OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting). All the metadata necessary for processing can be retrieved via an interface. Manual interaction between the submitter and the German National Library is no longer required for this. OAI-PMH based on HTTP, i. e. all security mechanisms which support the HTTP can be used to secure the transmitted information against security breaches. Further information can be obtained in the following introduction:

Automatic hotfolder submission procedure
In the hotfolder procedure an account is set up for each submitter. This is then used for actively transmitting the object and metadata to the German National Library via the SFTP or WebDAV interface. Individual transfer packages are submitted. These consist of zipped containers, each holding an object and a corresponding set of metadata.

2. Submission procedures for online university publications
1. Submitting online dissertations and post-doctoral theses
The submission is made by the relevant university library specified in the doctorate regulations.
2. Common metadata standard
The use and further processing of metadata require that all institutions involved use a common metadata standard. The metadata format for online dissertations XMetaDissPlus is based on the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set of the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative. It was developed by the German National Library and harmonised with the library alliances and the university libraries.
3. Transfer of metadata
It is important for the authors of online dissertations to create metadata for the documents and to send this to the German National Library. In response to the wishes of the university libraries, the metadata interface facilitates a variety of transfer possibilities. There are two basic types of transfer:
- an OAI-DataProvider interface which supports XMetaDissPlus. The structured metadata is harvested by the German National Library.
- a web form form for submission of monographic online publications and university dissertations and theses. The structured data is fed back to the applicant as soon as it has been recorded.

3. Submission procedures for periodical online publications
It is currently only possible to deposit periodical online publications via a web form, as submission via automatic delivery systems (OAI Harvesting and Hotfolder) is only possible for monographic online publications. Work is being conducted to extend the core set of metadata for the delivery of periodical online publications.
Submission of periodical online publications - notification of title
The metadata of a journal which is being deposited for the first time, or the title of which has changed, is delivered using the title notification form.
Submission of periodical online publications - delivery
The metadata is submitted together with the online publication (an issue or an article of a pre-registered journal) using the delivery form.
