Cataloguing
Online publications are not catalogued manually at present; the notified metadata is transformed into a bibliographic description in the catalogue.
Here the German National Library has the following objectives:
- Automatic cataloguing of online publications on the basis of metadata, where possible. Further possibilities for improving and enriching the data records by means of automatic processes are being trialled in a project.
- Similar to printed publications, online publications are recorded in the Deutsche Nationalbibliografie and in the catalogue of the German National Library
- Use of persistent identifiers to ensure permanent addressing and long-term quotability of online publications
To permit more effective use of metadata later, the German National Library has defined a core metadata set, containing the metadata required by the German National Library. This requires not only the bibliographic data but also rights information.
