"Bibliographic Services" data service

The German National Library offers the following ongoing and retrospective datasets in machine-readable formats via WWW or SFTP:

The records are supplied in MARC 21, MARC21-xml, RDF (several serialisations) (not available for all data) and DNB Casual (for bibliographic data only) formats. Descriptive cataloguing of bibliographic data based on the "Resource Description and Access" (RDA) standard started on 1 October 2015 at the German National Library.
The provision of data via WWW or SFTP is subject to fees. A contract must be entered into in order to obtain records.
The records are provided as available, with no guarantee to its being continuous, punctual, error-free or complete, or to its not infringing the rights of third parties (e.g. personal rights and copyright).

Complete deliveries under CC0 1.0 license

The following records are available free of charge under a CC0 1.0 license (see Terms of purchase and use). Since the end of January 2014, some geographic authority data contains unchanged coordinates from the GeoNames database. Since October 2015, some bibliographic data contains subject classes from Thema, a subject category scheme for a global book trade.
Most of the ZDB (available in German only) holdings records can also be re-used free of charge. The actual license status is indicated in the records themselves.

Log-in data

Please mail for the relevant log-in data to obtain a complete delivery in MARC 21 or MARC21-xml format.

Linked Data

The basic data holdings of the bibliographic records of the DNB and the ZDB plus the Integrated Authority File (GND) are available for download free of charge in RDF (RDF/XML), RDF (Turtle) and RDF (JSON-LD) serialization under CC0 1.0 licence as part of the Linked Data Service.

New developments regarding data services and information on format changes

The formats are modified at defined intervals (available in German only); relevant changes are published three months in advance.

Metadata updates

The data is updated via the free OAI interface (only XML variant) or for the GND and bibliographic records and holdings of ZDB via the weekly update service and through charged installments from the WWW or SFTP server (MARC 21 and XML variant).

Download of individual data records

Individual data records may also be obtained:

Test records

Test records (available in German only) are offered in the formats listed above. Test records in the RDF (RDF/XML or Turtle) format can be accessed via the catalogue (available in German only).

Entity Facts

Entity Facts is a data service of the German National Library which provides machine-readable "fact sheets" on the "Person" entity in the Integrated Authority File (GND). The entity data are provided in JavaScript Object Notation (JSON), permitting them to be embedded simply in external applications. The data service is currently in the test phase and is therefore offered as a beta version.

Further processing of metadata

To start with further processing of the metadata the software MarcEdit, d:swarm, the Metafacture or Catmandu software suites offer suitable solutions. For data analytics the "Konstanz Information Miner" (KNIME) or the Metadata Quality Assurance Framework might be usefull. More information on the sildes of "Open Source Software zur Verarbeitung und Analyse von Metadaten".
