Digital Services at the German National Library
The German National Library offers a comprehensive range of digital services, especially in the field of data transfer. The Digital Services department is a point of contact for all public and commercial clients and also for private users.
The Digital Services include:
- Deutsche Nationalbibliografie
- New Release Service
- Data Service
- Data Shop
- SRU Interface
- OAI Interface
- Linked Data Service
- URN Service
- Catalogue Enrichment
Besides the universally accessible database, which is available free of charge for general searches via public networks, the Digital Services department also provides customised solutions. Selections can be made based on specific criteria, but time intervals and formats can also be entered. Users can make selections by themselves, or have the data supplied by the German National Library. Charges are levied for data supply and additional services such as special data formats or compilations which involve greater effort on the part of the library.
At the start of 2010 the German National Library began a complete overhaul of its business model. The aim of the Library´s new model is to move gradually towards the free provision of data for downloading, use and processing. The published conditions for the free re-use of the data are based on the Creative Commons and the British Crown licence. In taking this step, the German National Library is supporting the free flow of data, especially amongst providers of bibliographic data, and is helping to realise the vision of an emancipated, freely accessible "web of data".
