Office for Library Standards
The Office for Library Standards (AfS) is an organisational unit of the German National Library. It manages and co-ordinates activities in various sections, represents its interests on various national and international levels and works as the administrative office for the Committee for Library Standards.
The offices of the different subareas of standardisation are also organisational units of the German National Library. They are entrusted with special tasks, e. g. conceiving, updating, introducing and maintaining library standards. Currently the following areas are established: Office for Codes for descriptive and subject indexing, indexing of electronic resources, Office for Authority Files as well as Office for Data Formats and Communication Interfaces.
Committee for Library Standards
The Committee for Library Standards is a consortium of large academic libraries and regional networks of the Federal Republic and consists of one representative from each of the Austrian and Swiss library system, the German public libraries, the Ständige Konferenz der Kultusminister der Länder der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, ekz Bibliotheksservice GmbH, as well as the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Its aim is to ensure the use of uniform standards for cataloguing, formats and interfaces of regional networks. The Committee for Library Standards is a nationwide co-ordinating body and contributes a professional opinion in decision-making processes. Berndt Dugall (Director of the Universitätsbibliothek Johann Christian Senckenberg in Frankfurt am Main) is the Chairman of the Committee for Library Standards.

Groups of experts support special tasks by advising, discussing and passing resolutions. The Committee for Library Standards has the following expert groups:
- expert group Authority data
- expert group Data Formats
- expert group for Descriptive cataloguing
- expert group for Subject cataloguing
The expert groups are generally made up of delegates from the institutions represented in the Committee for Library Standards. If required, the expert groups set up working groups for specific topics.
