GND formats and interfaces

The Integrated Authority File (GND) is operated by the German National Library. The Pica GND description format (available only in German) is closely based on MARC 21 Authority.

The GND authority data are available via the OAI or the SRU interface in MARC21-xml and RDFxml formats. If the GND data are to be held locally, the basic GND data stock must first be purchased. This is available via the Data Service in MARC 21 and MARC21-xml formats and via the Linked Data Service in RDFxml format. The data are updated using the weekly GND change service or the OAI interface.

The library networks initially transferred the basic GND data stock to their network systems and have obtained the authority file updates ever since, mostly using the OAI system. Use of the SRU interface or the online catalogue of the German National Library is recommended for accessing individual GND authority records.

The authority data are available free of charge to all interesed parties under Creative Commons Zero (CC0 1.0) licence.
