Steven Pinker is a passionate opponent of standard attitudes of cultural pessimism. In conversation with Elisabeth von Thadden (DIE ZEIT), he talks about his book "Aufklärung jetzt. Für Vernunft, Wissenschaft, Humanismus und Fortschritt. Eine Verteidigung" ("Enlightenment Now. The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress").

Hate, populism and irrationality are ruling the world, anti-scientific world views are spreading, truth has ceased to exist: this is what a glance at today’s headlines might lead one to think. However, Steven Pinker, Professor of Psychology at Harvard University, shows that this is false. He has investigated developments in previous centuries and proves in a study that our lives have steadily improved. Nowadays we live longer and are healthier, safer and wealthier than ever before, and this is not only the case in the Western world. The reason: enlightenment and its system of values. Without it, the world has no chance of becoming a better place for us all. Pinker’s book is an active rebuttal of the widespread sentiment that our modern society is doomed.

The event will be held in English and is being organised in cooperation with publishing company S. Fischer Verlag and DIE ZEIT.
