On the "Saures Papier, Mumien und krabbelnde Bewohner" guided tour we highlight typical damage to historical media and show how it can be combatted and prevented.

The oldest media of our main holdings have been on the shelves for over 100 years. Such a long period of time naturally leaves its mark on books, journals and gramophone records. It is the responsibility of the German National Library to ensure the long-term preservation of these media and to make sure that they can still be read and heard.

The threats are manifold: ageing of the materials, historical forms of holdings maintenance, harmful organisms etc. Our preservation staff show different types of damage and explain what can be done about them. They provide a glimpse behind the scenes of the restoration and preservation departments of the German National Library.
