VIAF - Virtual International Authority File

Objective

The project involved the integration and linking of the Name Authority File (PND), the Library of Congress Name Authority File (LCNAF), the authority file of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and 22 other authority files of 20 partners to create a VIAF for names, and its success has proved that the VIAF concept can also be applied to larger data stocks..

The VIAF links together different sets of authority data from all over the world and provides users with access to publications via authority data in their preferred language and script. The required functions for the VIAF were developed as part of the project. The foundations were also laid for its expansion and the incorporation of further entities.

Since 2012 the VIAF has been operated as a regular service by OCLC in conjunction with all other project partners. Its ongoing expansion is planned.
