Subject Cataloguing

The work involved in cataloguing the content of all incoming publications is distributed across the Frankfurt and Leipzig sites of the German National Library, based on the Library's regional media processing principles.

At least one subject group of the Deutsche Nationalbibliografie is assigned to each publication. More detailed subject cataloguing is undertaken in the form of verbal indexing using subject headings according to the Rules for the Subject Catalogue (RSWK); classificatory indexing based on the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) has also been carried out since 2007.

Most publications of Series A, B and H in the Deutsche Nationalbibliografie are fully DDC annotated. Not included here are school textbooks, fiction and poetry, children's and juvenile literature, and medical dissertations. The publications released by the publishing trade (including translations and works on German subjects) and maps (Series A and C of the Deutsche Nationalbibliografie) are also indexed using subject headings based on the RSWK. Authority data from the Gemeinsame Normdatei (GND) (until April 2012: SWD and PND) is used for this. Not included in the subject cataloguing process are publications such as regional calendars, event programmes, price lists, and the like.
