29 March to 1 April 2024

The German National Library will be closed at both locations. The exhibitions of the German Museum of Books and Writing will open from 10:00 to 18:00.

Overview

Metadata can be obtained from the Data Shop free of charge for use in other applications, e.g. in local library catalogues, for reference management or for further processing and analysis in the user's own system environment.

After a free one-off registration process, metadata that have been researched and selected in the German National Library's catalogue can be downloaded for further processing in the user's own system. The data can be converted into various export formats for download.

Download metadata free of charge

Metadata research begins in the DNB's catalogue.

When displaying the search results, hit lists or individual hits can be transferred to "Meine Auswahl …" (My selection) using the "Aktionen“ (Actions) menu on the right. The maximum number of hits that can be selected from individual data records is 200, while a complete list of hits for one search query may not exceed 10,000 data records.

In order to download the metadata you have selected, use the menu on the left to switch to the Data Shop (log-in required). The previously selected individual hits and hit lists will be displayed here. They can be downloaded in various export formats. To do this, select the data records and export format required. Clicking on "Auftrag starten" (Start transaction) will convert the metadata into the desired export format. The list of tasks is displayed in the left-hand menu under "Transaktionen" (Transactions).

The Data Shop's functions are also described under „Hilfe: Individuelle Bibliografie im Format pdf-natbib" (Help: individual bibliography in pdf-natbib format (only available in German)) with explanatory illustrations.

More extensive volumes of data can be obtained through interfaces, as full copies or by submitting selection requests (the latter are subject to fees).

Data formats

The Data Shop allows you to obtain metadata in various export formats free of charge. The following data formats are available:

  • MARC 21 (also in XML structure)
  • RDF (various serialisations)
  • CSV (only for bibliographic data)
  • DNB Casual (only for bibliographic data)
