I. General information

Profile

Through their reproduction service the German National Library offers users the possibility to order paper and digital copies of media works for non-commercial purposes insofar as this is permitted under copyright regulations. Copies are sent by post, digitally or by fax anywhere in Germany.

Media works which cannot be copied for preservation reasons are excluded from this service.

For legal reasons, only in exceptional cases can orders received from abroad be processed and the resulting copies sent abroad. Such cases are subject to careful scrutiny. Please contact: info-l@dnb.de

Legal aspects

Under copyright law, public libraries may only make and deliver copies to order if the recipient will only be using them privately and for other personal, non-commercial purposes.

The law permits the copying of individual articles published in specialised periodicals or academic journals and up to 10 per cent of the entire volume of any published media work.

You as the user are responsible for observing and complying with copyright regulations.

User groups

• User group 1 – Employees of universities and public institutions, libraries
• User group 1a – Pupils, trainees, students

• User group 2 – Private individuals

The customer must specify their user group in the reproduction request form and provide appropriate proof on request.

Charges

The charges apply for each separate order/article plus postage. However, several pages or chapters from a book, or journal articles from a particular year, can be combined in a single order, provided that the total number of pages does not exceed the limit permitted by copyright law.

The copyright contribution set out in the overall contract with the VG WORD collecting society for the delivery is included in the respective charges.

The costs are calculated as follows, based on user group affiliation:

User group 1

7.50 Euro

User group 1a

6.50 Euro

User group 2

8.50 Euro

The above charges apply for 1 to 20 pages and include copyright-related fees. Each additional A4 copy costs 0.15 Euro.

The invoice will be sent together with the copies. Payments are made by bank transfer. Credit cards are not accepted.

II. How a media reproduction request is handled

Request

Requests are sent using the Order form (only available in German). All fields marked * are mandatory. You can obtain precise information about the media work by consulting the German National Library’s catalogue (https://portal.dnb.de/).

Your contact data will be stored for billing purposes.
We will notify you as soon as we have reviewed your request and send you information about the anticipated costs.

Delivery methods and deadlines

The following delivery methods are available: digital, post or fax.

Your request will be processed within 5 working days.

If the processing is likely to take longer, e.g. because extensive or difficult research is required, you will be notified within this period of time.
