The German National Library uses over 40 IT systems to successfully and efficiently complete its tasks. As a computer scientist, you create and maintain these systems. You support areas that are already working digitally and help your colleagues to implement digital transformation in work areas that have hitherto remained largely analogue.

The degree course combines theory and practice: during the semester, you will learn the foundations and then apply these in practice during the semester vacation.

From the project concept, to mapping out the requirements and developing the software, through to successfully operating the finished application: during the practical phases, we will provide you with a comprehensive insight into all the tasks relating to computer science. The subjects addressed are just as varied as the tasks performed.

These range:

  • from the analysis and conversion of data formats,
  • to the analysis and cataloguing of electronic texts using AI tools
  • and the presentation of library-related information and the collections in web applications,
  • through to the visualisation and analysis of the giant data collections using big-data tools.

The German National Library trains two students every year as part of the dual degree course. We offer on-the-job training at our location in Frankfurt am Main in connection with a practice-oriented course of study at DHBW Mannheim.

The course commences on 1 October and lasts three years.

Remuneration is paid in accordance with the collective wage agreement for trainees in public service. This amounts to approx. €1,300 a month.

  • Training location: Frankfurt am Main/Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University Mannheim (DHBW)
