The fifteenth "Shaping Access!" conference will focus on artificial intelligence.
Artificial intelligence has been a dominant topic of debate in society, politics and law for some time.
AI is trasforming the way cultural heritage is collected, catalogued, indexed and made searchable. It is also having an impact on the art world and facilitating new production processes. But what opportunities and risks does this entail? There is little or no transparency in the results generated by algorithms, and AI technology enables manipulation on an unprecedented scale.
This has raised a host of fundamental new questions concerning access to cultural heritage:
What ethical principles should govern the use of artificial intelligence in the cultural heritage sector? How important are transparency and traceable sources? What issues need to be considered when handling sensitive data? What role do traditional cultural heritage institutions play in this context? To what extent, and by whom, can digitised cultural heritage collections be used as training data for AI models?
Participants will explore these questions in numerous presentations, discussions, focus groups and a "Market of Opportunities”. The German National Library, which has years of experience using artificial intelligence in its cataloguing processes, will be represented by Maximilian Kähler, who will deliver a presentation on "Cataloguing and AI – results from the four-year AI project at the DNB".
A varied supporting programme of guided tours and evening events will complement the conference's specialist agenda.
On 22 October, Leipzig's City Archive will host a reception followed by a ceremony in which the „Riegel – KulturBewahren“ : award for cultural preservation will be presented to "Shaping Access!"
On the evening of Thursday 23 October, conference attendees will visit the German Museum of Books and Writing for the exclusive opening of the exhibition "Forget it?! The future and past of knowledge storage. Remembrance culture on a journey through time", which was developed in cooperation with the German Institute for Literature.

The conference series “Shaping Access! – More Responsibility for Cultural Heritage” is a contribution to the discourse on the opportunities, obstacles, challenges and changes facing libraries, archives and museums as well as their relationships with other institutions, initiatives and commercial enterprises in connection with digitisation.
The conference is sponsored by the Federal Archives, the German National Library, the German Film Institute & Film Museum, the German National Committee for the Protection of Historic Monuments, the German Digital Library, the Digitisation Research and Competence Centre in Berlin, iRights e.V., the Jewish Museum in Frankfurt am Main, the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, Wikimedia Deutschland and the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe.

1 / Mit den öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln
Mit dem Zug
Vom Hauptbahnhof eine der S-Bahnen Richtung Süden nehmen: S1 oder S2 Richtung Stötteritz, S3 Richtung Wurzen/Oschatz, S 4 Richtung Markkleeberg-Gaschwitz, S5/S5X Richtung Zwickau oder S6 Richtung Geithain. An der Station „Leipzig MDR“ aussteigen (Fahrzeit etwa 7 Minuten). Den Ausgang „Semmelweisstraße“ nehmen, dann rechts ca. 800 m bis zur Kreuzung „Straße des 18. Oktober“.
Oder vom Hauptbahnhof (Vorplatz) mit der Straßenbahnlinie 16, Gleis 2, Richtung Lößnig bis zur Haltestelle „Deutsche Nationalbibliothek“. Fahrzeit etwa 11 Minuten.
Mit dem Flugzeug
Vom Flughafen Leipzig/Halle mit der S-Bahn S5/S5X Richtung Zwickau. Fahrtzeit etwa 30 Minuten bis zur Haltestelle „Leipzig MDR“. Ausgang Semmelweisstraße, dann rechts ca. 800 m bis zur Kreuzung „Straße des 18. Oktober“.
2 / Mit dem Fahrrad
In Leipzig ist die Deutsche Nationalbibliothek sehr gut mit dem Fahrrad zu erreichen. Sowohl über die Straße des 18. Oktobers, über die Semmelweißstraße, als auch über die Philipp-Rosenthal-Straße ist die DNB über Fahrradwege zu erreichen. Vor dem Haupteingang der DNB verläuft eine Fahrradstraße. Entlang dieser und am Haupteingang des Deutschen Buch- und Schriftmuseums stehen zahlreiche Abstellmöglichkeiten zur Verfügung. Die Fahrradständer vor dem Museum sind überdacht.
Zusätzlich zur Fahrradstraße erreichen Sie die Abstellmöglichkeiten über einen Durchgang von der Kreuzung Semmelweißstraße/Philipp-Rosenthal-Straße aus über den Turmhof der DNB.
3 / Mit dem Pkw
Von Norden kommend
A9 bis Schkeuditzer Kreuz, dort auf die A14 Richtung Dresden bis Ausfahrt Leipzig-Mitte; weiter auf der B2 Richtung Leipzig-Mitte bis zur Kreuzung Prager Straße/Semmelweisstrasse (Ausschilderung Deutsche Nationalbibliothek).
Aus Süden und Osten kommend
A9 beziehungsweise A14, wechseln auf die A38 bis Ausfahrt Leipzig-Süd; weiter auf der B2 bis zur Ausfahrt Südvorstadt; rechts auf die Kurt-Eisner-Straße bis zur Deutschen Nationalbibliothek.
4 / Barrierefreiheit
Die Deutsche Nationalbibliothek in Leipzig verfügt über Behindertenparkplätze direkt vor dem Gebäude. Der Eingang für behinderte Benutzerinnen und Benutzer ist ausgewiesen. Die Lesesäle sowie die Cafeteria können über Aufzüge erreicht werden.
