The richly illustrated catalogue of the permanent exhibition “Exile. Experience and Testimony” organised by the German Exile Archive has now been published by Göttinger Wallstein Verlag.

Like the exhibition itself, the catalogue focuses on testimonies to exile and presents 75 exhibits in large-format images. The catalogue is available at the German National Library's reception desks in Leipzig and Frankfurt am Main and can be purchased soon from booksellers.

The book invites the reader to observe the exhibits, reflect on them and engage with the experiences of exile that each one represents. An introduction by Sylvia Asmus and the texts in the chapters on “Escape”, “In Exile” and “After Exile” structure and contextualise the material.

The catalogue provides theme-based and biographical access to the exhibition: the life stories of eight exiles are narrated on specially designed fold-out pages, showing that experiences of exile between 1933–1945 were as varied as they were personal.

Also included in the volume are an essay by Doron Rabinovici, a map of the world showing countries of refuge and the numbers of refugees who fled there, and a glossary of names.

Sylvia Asmus is the Director of the German Exile Archive 1933–1945 and the exhibition area at the German National Library in Frankfurt am Main. She is responsible for exhibitions and publications on topics relating to exile.
