Buddy Elias – In memoriam

On 16 March 2015, the Swiss actor Buddy Elias died in Basel aged 89. Well known from film and TV productions, the actor was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1925. He and his family emigrated to Switzerland in 1931.

As a cousin of Anne Frank, who was murdered by the Nazis, and as the long-standing president of the Anne Frank Foundation, Buddy Elias played an important part in the publication and dramatisation of Anne Frank’s diary. The German National Library’s exile collections and the Anne Frank Shoah Library contain many different portrayals of exile and the Holocaust. We had the privilege of welcoming Buddy Elias to our Frankfurt premises in November 2013. Together with Fritzi Haberlandt and Mirjam Pressler, he presented the complete edition of Anne Frank’s works published by S. Fischer. As Anne Frank's last living relative, Buddy Elias kept the Franks’ family history in living memory. He was planning to join us for the opening of Frankfurt liest ein Buch (Frankfurt reads a book) in April. His voice will be missed.
