Book donation for the German National Library

Private collector Rüdiger Harms, who lives in Bochum, has made a generous donation of books to the German National Library for its exile collections. In all, 40 different translations dating from before 1950 have been added to the collection. Many of the books still have their rare original wrappers and are a superb addition to the existing holdings in Frankfurt and Leipzig.

One particularly outstanding literary work is the Mexican first edition of Anna Seghers’ work Transit, dating from 1944. Other works worthy of mention include La Hija, the Spanish translation of Bruno Frank’s work Die Tochter (The Daughter) (Buenos Aires, 1944), and Ernst Lothar’s El Prisonero (Heldenplatz – The Prisoner) (Buenos Aires, 1946). Other titles include El Tigre Azul (Der blaue Tiger – The Blue Tiger) by Alfred Döblin, Simona (Simone) by Lion Feuchtwanger, La Rebelion des los Pescadores (Aufstand der Fischer von St. Barbara – Revolt of the Fishermen of Santa Barbara) by Anna Seghers (all published in Buenos Aires in 1945), Tres Dias (Drei Tage – Three Days) by Victoria Wolf (La Plata, 1945), and Tres Camaradas (Drei Kameraden – Three Comrades) by Erich Maria Remarque (Montevideo, n.d.). The political publications include a Czech translation of Julius Deutsch’s Der Bürgerkrieg in Österreich (The Civil War in Austria) dating from 1934. The book is still in its original condition and still has the wrapper designed by Thomas Theodor Heine. Also worth mentioning are Španělsko Krvăcĭ, the Czech version of Arthur Koestler’s book on the Spanish civil war published in 1937, and a contemporary analysis by Emil Ludwig titled La Historia que estamos viviendo (Bogotá, 1942).
