Entity Facts

Entity Facts is a data service of the German National Library which provides machine-readable "fact sheets" on entities in the Integrated Authority File (GND). The entity data are provided in JavaScript Object Notation (JSON), permitting them to be embedded simply in external applications.

The purpose of the Entity Facts service is to aggregate information on entities in the Integrated Authority File (GND) by offering both selected items on the entities concerned and also links to other data sources. This allows authority data to be used without the need for specific (format) knowledge and for it to be integrated in other applications with little technical effort.

The first version of this service includes and provides, in structured form, information from the GND on the "Person" entity and links to other data sources (e.g. VIAF, ISNI, BNF, LoC, Wikipedia, Bayerisches Musiker-Lexikon Online, IMDb) via an Application Programming Interface (API) in JSON format. Links to other data sources are based on publicly provided BEACON files evaluated by the German National Library.

The base-URL of the Entity Facts service is:

The GND number is appended to this in order to search for a specific entity.

The first user is the German Digital Library (DDB), which offers person-related pages on the basis of Entity Facts.

Further information from external data sources (such as Wikipedia) will be added to the "Fact Sheet" in the future. There are also plans to supplement the service with further GND entities (e.g. corporate bodies and geographic information) and to maintain and expand the links to other data sources.

Project duration

The service was set up in 2014 as part of the initial project aimed at representing the "Person" and "Corporate" entities and is now being offered and developed as part of the Linked Data Service.
